Do I need a Structural Engineer?

So, you've been advised to appoint a Structural Engineer. But what is a Structural Engineer and why do you need one? Most building projects involve the careful collaboration of several professionals. A Structural Engineer is the one tasked with making sure the building remains standing.

Once engaged, a Structural Engineer will usually visit to understand the type and size of the existing structure if working with an existing building or, the site specifics such as location and ground condition where working on a new build project. At this stage the engineer may advise where openings in floors, walls or ceilings need to be undertaken to better understand what's required.

Once these initial observations are made, the Structural Engineer will begin the design, advising on foundations, floor, wall and roof structure along with columns and beams as required to achieve the design. These structures are sized based on some pretty clever calculations which are required to confirm compliance with Building Regulations (Approved Document A if you’re wondering).

The engineer will then prepare detailed floor plans, sections and connection details along with the structural calculations. They will remain on board to answer any queries throughout the duration of the project.

So, what's it going to cost?

The Structural Engineer’s fees depend on a few factors, notably the size, type and location of your project.

For a typical extension, costs are likely to be in the region of £1,000 to £3,000 including VAT. Your Architect will request a fee on your behalf for consideration.
